Quad 405 restoration

Two units of the legendary Quad 405 amplifier are up for restoration. Both defective and miserable. I guess they have been used in some special setup and someone fitted XLR input and speaker connectors..

A paint job, and restoring the internals. All caps renewed. New speaker posts. The amplifier was upgraded with new low-noise op-amps. One unit had a defective transformer, it made a quite loud humming noise. A typical fault with these amplifiers, and many got changed on the warranty back in the day. I replaced it with a 300VA toroid.

A legendary amplifier, as seen here driving a pair of Revox BX-4100.

Though not original, the sating black finish, is beautiful.

NAD 3080 restoration

The unit as received.. top of the line amplifier from the NAD line in 1978. Now defective and in a quite miserable condition.

Filter caps gave up long time ago, I decided to change all el-caps on this unit. Several broken switches and missing knobs, which I was lucky to obtain.

Broken speaker terminals replaced with more modern speaker posts.

The meters was carefully opened and the bulbs replaced.

Finally, the end result, a very well sounding amplifier.
